Embark on an extraordinary adventure with our train tour to Machu Picchu, where you’ll discover five of Peru’s most remarkable sites. This journey includes visits to four significant Inca ruins in the Sacred Valley, culminating in the breathtaking Machu Picchu.
The Sacred Valley was the heart of the Inca Empire, surrounded by three major agricultural hubs: Chinchero, Pisac, and Ollantaytambo. This lush valley, shaped by the Urubamba River and bordered by snow-capped peaks, served as the empire’s primary source of sustenance.
On your train ride to Machu Picchu, you’ll also see two fascinating Inca creations. First, the Salineras de Maras—ancient salt terraces that generated substantial amounts of salt. Second, Moray—an intriguing archaeological site with circular platforms that created varied microclimates, perfect for crop experimentation.
After exploring the Sacred Valley, you’ll make your way to Machu Picchu, where you’ll enjoy a full day immersed in its splendor before returning to Cusco by train.
The tour is structured with one day dedicated to the Sacred Valley and the second day for Machu Picchu, making it one of the best ways to experience this iconic site by train. Alternatively, you can opt for a 2-day tour that skips the Sacred Valley. Click to check Tour to Machu Picchu By Train in 2Days. However, if you are in a hurry, this tour can be done in one day, click to check the Full-Day Tour to Machu Picchu by train.
Start your adventure in the Sacred Valley, visiting Chinchero, Moray, the salt mines, and Ollantaytambo. We’ll pick you up from your Cusco hotel between 6:45 and 7:00 am.
First, explore Chinchero for 1.5 hours, including a local handicraft shop and archaeological site. Next, we’ll visit Moray, known for its circular terraces used by the Incas for crop acclimatization.
Then, discover the salt mines, an important Inca trade resource, and enjoy a buffet lunch in the Urubamba Valley. Afterward, we’ll see the Temple of the Sun in Ollantaytambo, a key defensive site during the Inca civil war, for about an hour.
We’ll then take the train to Aguas Calientes, where our assistant will guide you to your hostel. In the evening, enjoy dinner in the main square and a briefing for the next day. You’ll have free time to explore the town, visit hot springs, or shop for local crafts.
If you prefer, you can choose a 2-day Machu Picchu train tour without the Sacred Valley or a full-day tour if you’re short on time. Click here for more information on these options.

However, from December to April, you may experience occasional brief rain showers that typically do not disrupt your plans. Since Machu Picchu is situated at a lower altitude on the other side of the Andes, daytime temperatures are around 25°C, while nighttime temperatures can drop to approximately 13°C. As a result, heavy winter clothing is not required. Click here to check the current Peruvian weather.
Machu Picchu features several captivating destinations, including Machu Picchu Mountain, Huayna Picchu Mountain, the Inca Bridge, and the Sun Gate.
